Willow Lake Sunrise

Willow Lake Sunrise

We got back in the Rialta and headed for Valdez to look for bears. On the way we camped at the Willow Lake overlook, which has a vista into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This is the largest National Park in the United States, six times the size of Yellowstone, with four mountain ranges and nine of the sixteen highest peaks in the United States.

Willow Lake was smooth as glass and there was some mist over the lake, so I bounded off through the roadside vegetation to the shore of the lake, just in time to catch the sunrise behind Mt. Drum (12,010 ft.) and Mt. Sanford (16,237′).

Volcanic Ash Falling in Willow Alaska

Alaska Volanco Mount Redoubt

WILLOW, Alaska  -The Alaska Volcano Observatory says Mount Redoubt erupted five times overnight. It sent a plume of ash more than 9 miles into the air, and the ash is now falling on the town of Willow, about 50 miles north of Anchorage. Ash from Alaska’s volcanos can resemble tiny rock fragments with jagged edges. It has been used as an industrial abrasive and can cause injuries.

Any Comments on some of the issues with the ash fall in Willow?

Please note on the dangers associated with flying planes right now.   It may be more dangerous flying than it appears with the ash in the skies.

Half Day and Full Day Trips

All of the following trips include fishing poles, tackle, rain gear, waders, and a shore lunch.
Transportation to and from your hotel / B&B can be arrainged for an additional fee.
Unless noted otherwise, all trips are available mid May through the end of August.

Willow Creek

Willow Creek offers fishing for 4 species of salmon along with world class rainbow trout.
This river is class 1-2 water with lots of wood, log jams and snags…perfect habitat for large rainbows! The Willow is easily accessed and allows for both half day and full day floats.

Little Willow Creek

As it’s name suggests this river is somewhat smaller than Willow Creek, but still offers the same great fishing for salmon and trout. Little Willow is also class 1-2 water with less snags and lots of corners. With it’s limited access, this is an all day float.

Montana Creek

Montana Creek is a swift, clear flowing river located 25 miles north of Willow.
The rainbow trout fishing is fantastic although catch and release rules apply to the entire river.
Salmon fill the Montana from mid June through the end of August and can be kept if you’re in the right places. This is a perfect half day float!

Chulitna River Middle Fork

The Middle Fork of the Chulitna is located in Broad Pass, on the road to Denali National Park.
Nestled between two mountain ranges, this float gets a triple A+ for scenic views.
Rainbow trout and King Salmon are our main targets, along with the occational brown bear sighting thrown in for good measure. This trip is available mid June through mid July.
Due to this rivers remote location and difficult access, special rates apply. Call for details

New Jersey Woman Take on Iditarod

posted in: Iditarod - No Comments

WILLOW, Alaska — Kim Darst drove from Montrose to Willow, Alaska — a butt-numbing 4,500-mile trip that took her eight days.

Once she got to Willow, however, the hard part was just beginning for the Blairstown, N.J. resident.

Darst, 41, is aiming to become the first New Jersey resident to finish the renowned Iditarod Sled Dog Race, which pushed off from Willow Lake on Sunday and traverses 1,150 miles, with the winner expected to take about 10 days and newcomers like Darst crossing the line after nearly two weeks of battling sub-freezing temperatures and icy winds.

Darst was one of 68 mushers who started the 37th edition of the race, with the goal being to negotiate the harsh Alaska climate and picturesque, but grueling, terrain en route to the finish line in Nome.

Darst is no stranger to adventure. Her full-time job is flying helicopters and teaching students to fly. She recently bought an airstrip in New Jersey, owns several helicopters and is licensed to fly commercial jets.

But for two weeks, she’ll trade in mechanized motorization for 16 Alaskan huskies, which will serve as her engines.

She became interested in sled dog racing about 10 years ago and in 2002 started buying Alaskan huskies from four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher. Darst owns Husky Haven Kennel in Montrose, where she keeps over 25 huskies that she now owns.

Along with her 16 dogs, her mom and 10 friends accompanied her from Montrose and will follow her progress over the two-week ordeal.

Prior to Sunday’s start, Darst had just a few words, in fact just one, to describe how she felt as she waited in the staging area on frozen Willow Lake.

“Overwhelmed, overwhelmed, overwhelmed,” she said.

If she can finish the grueling trek to Nome, which promises temperatures close to 50-below and 60 mph winds, she just might be speechless.
